Comparison brief

Bank of America Premium Rewards vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred

Browse all comparisons

Short answer: both charge $95, but the Sapphire Preferred is the stronger earner if you will transfer points, and Premium Rewards is the simpler card if you want plain cash value. After the credits we count as usable, Premium Rewards costs about $20 ($95 minus $50 of its $100 airline incidental credit and $25 for Global Entry), and the Preferred about $65 (its Global Entry credit is the only one we count). Premium Rewards earns 2x on dining and travel and 1.5x on everything else, in points we value at one cent each, with no transfer partners. The Preferred earns 3x on dining, streaming, online groceries, and gas and 2x on other travel, with Chase transfer partners. Choose Premium Rewards if most of your spending falls outside the Preferred’s bonus categories and you will use its airline credit. Choose the Preferred if your spending is dining, streaming, groceries, and gas, or you will transfer points. Bank of America has no portal of its own in our catalog, and the Preferred’s 5x applies only at Chase Travel. The head-to-head run below solves both cards against your own spending.
