Capital One Quicksilver vs Citi Double Cash: Which Flat-Rate Card Actually Pays More?

Both are $0-fee 'flat rate' cards, but the rates aren't equal — Quicksilver pays 1.5%, Double Cash pays 2%. Here's where they match and where they don't.

Two "flat rate" cards, two different rates

Capital One Quicksilver and Citi Double Cash both carry a $0 annual fee and get recommended constantly as the simple, no-thinking-required cash-back card. What gets lost in that reputation is that they don't actually pay the same flat rate on everyday spend.

The rate table

Quicksilver ($0)Double Cash ($0)
Everyday spend1.5%2%
Hotels & other travel, booked via the issuer's own portal5x5x
Annual fee$0$0
Transfer partners (on the card itself)NoneNone

The 0.5-point gap

Quicksilver's base rate is 1.5% on everything outside its portal bonus; Double Cash's base rate is 2%. On $30,000 a year in everyday spend, that half-point gap is worth $150/year in Double Cash's favor — before either card's portal bonus even enters the picture. If your spend doesn't concentrate in a category either card specifically bonuses (neither does — both are flat-rate outside travel-portal bookings), Double Cash's higher baseline wins on pure math every time.

Where they're identical

Both cards pay the same 5x rate on hotels and other travel booked through their own bank's travel portal — Capital One Travel for Quicksilver, Citi Travel for Double Cash. Neither one bonuses flights specifically or carries any bonus category beyond that portal rate; everything else runs at the base rate.

The transfer-partner catch

Neither Quicksilver nor Double Cash unlocks transfer partners by itself. Capital One's transfer network only opens up if you separately hold a card like the Venture X; Citi's ThankYou transfer network opens up with a card like Strata Premier or Strata Elite. If you're chasing transferable points rather than straight cash back, neither of these two cards gets you there on its own — that's a separate card decision layered on top of this one.

Who should pick which

  • Want the highest flat cash-back rate with zero complexity: Double Cash's 2% baseline beats Quicksilver's 1.5% on every dollar outside the shared portal bonus.
  • Already living in the Capital One ecosystem, or planning to add a Venture-series card: Quicksilver keeps everything under one login, but you're accepting a third less on non-portal spend than Double Cash pays.
  • Book hotels or other travel through a bank portal regularly: both cards match at 5x there, so the portal bonus doesn't break the tie — the 1.5% vs. 2% baseline still decides it.

Run the optimizer with your real spend mix to see how either of these stacks up against category-bonus cards rather than assuming a flat rate is automatically the simplest good answer.
